Take the Non-GMO Challenge for Earth Month

non gmo challenge

April is Earth Month, a time of the year very close to our hearts. It’s a good time to reflect on what we do to keep our planet healthy and beautiful and to educate ourselves on what else we could be doing. This includes not using poisonous sprays or chemicals on farm crops or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

For Earth Month, Non-GMO Project is hosting the Non-GMO Challenge, where you can make your own commitment to a non-GMO lifestyle. Challenge yourself to say no to GMO in April. If you’re not quite ready to make the full non-GMO leap, you can commit to as little as one non-GMO meal this month or if you’re ready to go 100% non-GMO you can also commit to eating completely non-GMO all month long. You can go at your own pace!

Best of all, if you submit a photo of you (or your pets) with a sign sharing your non-GMO commitment you could win a Non-GMO Dreambox each week this month from the Non-GMO Project. The Dreambox comes filled with all sorts of non-GMO goodies.

So, will you join us in taking the non-GMO Challenge? We would love it if you also posted your photo commitment to our Facebook page!

Farm Stand Pours First Non-GMO Wine

frey organic wines

If you’re at all familiar with the Farm Stand philosophy, you know how important it is too us that our ingredients are fresh, organic and free of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Chef Alex goes to great lengths to ensure that the ingredients he uses are safe to eat and free of these harmful chemicals.

With that mission in mind, we we are happy to announce that we are now serving Frey Wines’ organic Natural White and Natural Red wines. Frey is the first non-GMO verified wine, and we are happy to be pouring it at Farm Stand. Frey Vineyards, located in Mendocino County, CA, has the distinction of being America’s first organic winery. Frey uses holistic vineyard management to sustain a healthy balance in their vineyard instead of using harmful pesticides and fertilizers.

Frey takes their ingredients seriously, which is why they were will to undertake a three year process to ensure that the yeast they used to make their wine was completely free of GMOs. Not only are Frey wines non-GMO, but they are also free of added sulfites and gluten-free.

In a Frey wine you can be confident that you are only tasting one thing: grapes!

Where are GMOs?

Image

So now that we know exactly what GMOs are, where are they then? They’re right there in your food! Since the 90s, GMOs have been present in the vast majority of processed foods in the US. Shockingly, they are banned in Europe and other areas of the world, however the FDA does not require GMOs to even be listed on food labels whatsoever.

With various attempts to increase nutritional benefits or productivity, the two main consequences that GMOs have lead to are herbicide tolerance and a plant’s ability to produce its own pesticide. Resulting in no health benefits, only economic benefit to the major corporations.

Health Benefits of Cactus Tortillas

Image

One of our crowd favorites at Farm Stand is our Spicy Southwestern Salad, topped with one very special ingredient: non-GMO organic cactus tortillas! Not only are cactus tortillas delicious, they pack a healthy and history-filled punch! Scientists continue to study this fruit (yes, fruit!) for its value in nutrition.

Prickly pear, aka cactus, contains vitamins C and B, beta carotene, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, amino acids, antioxidants, and various other nutrients that reverse free radical damage in cells as well as cut inflammation.

Also, the Native Americans used it for folk medicine to reduce inflammation and help to increase stamina. Prickly pear has also been found to boost the immune system.

And it’s not just for eating! Besides that, the cactus has been used to treat burns, wounds, and cuts, using the sap from the pads. The cactus itself, minus the needles, are used for more than 100 ailments from gastrointestinal disorders to skin problems.

You can buy cactus pads in many supermarkets, ethnic produce stores, online, and of course here at Farm Stand!

Have you tried our cactus tortillas yet?

Could LA Become GMO-Free?

Image

Big news in the GMO world! Los Angeles Council Members Paul Koretz and Mitch O’Farrell introduced a motion that would curb the cultivation, sale, and distribution of genetically modified seeds, mainly aimed at protecting local gardens and city-grown food from future contamination.

If the motion passes, Los Angeles would become the largest city in the U.S. to be GMO-free. Although the motion would not impact the sale of any foods containing GMOs, the ripple effect it could have is important.

This could be the start of a non-GMO Revolution! If you want to be a part of it, be sure to contact the Los Angeles City Council and let them know you want stricter laws regarding GMOs.

Here’s to healthy eating!

Healthy Halloween

Image

We love celebrating Halloween here at Farmstand! Seeing everyone all dressed up as their favorite character puts a smile on faces. We don’t like, however, all of the processed ingredients in our Trick-or-Treaters’ candy! There are, however, plenty of healthy and non-GMO options to hand out this year!

If you do want to pass out candy, try Trader Joe’s Organic Pops or anything from Annie’s snack line. We like their gummy snacks!

Passing out some special treasures to the kids is also a fun, unique idea. Try stickers, friendship bracelets, or other fun favors! These treasures are great because they can last way past the next day, so they hold more value to the trick-or-treaters.

Remember, too much of a good thing is no good! Even healthy candy should be eaten in moderation.

Have a happy, healthy, and safe Halloween from everyone here at Farmstand!
