Could LA Become GMO-Free?

Big news in the GMO world! Los Angeles Council Members Paul Koretz and Mitch O’Farrell introduced a motion that would curb the cultivation, sale, and distribution of genetically modified seeds, mainly aimed at protecting local gardens and city-grown food from future contamination.

If the motion passes, Los Angeles would become the largest city in the U.S. to be GMO-free. Although the motion would not impact the sale of any foods containing GMOs, the ripple effect it could have is important.

This could be the start of a non-GMO Revolution! If you want to be a part of it, be sure to contact the Los Angeles City Council and let them know you want stricter laws regarding GMOs.

Here’s to healthy eating!

Healthy Halloween

We love celebrating Halloween here at Farmstand! Seeing everyone all dressed up as their favorite character puts a smile on faces. We don’t like, however, all of the processed ingredients in our Trick-or-Treaters’ candy! There are, however, plenty of healthy and non-GMO options to hand out this year!

If you do want to pass out candy, try Trader Joe’s Organic Pops or anything from Annie’s snack line. We like their gummy snacks!

Passing out some special treasures to the kids is also a fun, unique idea. Try stickers, friendship bracelets, or other fun favors! These treasures are great because they can last way past the next day, so they hold more value to the trick-or-treaters.

Remember, too much of a good thing is no good! Even healthy candy should be eaten in moderation.

Have a happy, healthy, and safe Halloween from everyone here at Farmstand!

Roasting Vegetables

We all know we need to eat our vegetables, but do you ever want to eat your vegetables? When they’re roasted, we sure do! Believe us, roasting vegetables can take them to a whole new level where you actually crave them. Lucky for us, almost any veggie can be roasted using the same method so once you have it down, you can master any kind. Here you will learn how to roast your vegetables to perfection, like the roasted eggplant in our Roasted Eggplant and Goat Cheese small plate and our vegan Farmstand Eggplant Stew.

Two things to keep in mind: heat and surface area. The more surface area on the veggie and the higher the heat, the more flavorful the end result will be. So, be sure to cut up your vegetable into small, 1-1 ½ inch pieces. Then, crank the oven to at least 425° and let preheat. Then in a large bowl, toss the veggies with salt, pepper, and olive oil and spread evenly on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the preheated for about 10-15 minutes until you hear the veggies sizzling away. Now, just serve and enjoy! What are your favorite vegetables to roast? Let us know!
